Wellbeing Curriculum

At North Melbourne PS we seek to provide our students with an education that gives each child the best start to a happy, healthy and bright future. We aim to promote and model respect and equality, and to teach our children how to build healthy relationships, resilience and confidence.

Our wellbeing program comprises of two main areas. One being ‘Respectful Relationships’, the Department of Education wellbeing curriculum (mandated from 2019) and the second is the Swinburne University “Aristotle: Emotional Intelligence Program” that NMPS is fortunate
enough to work collaboratively with Swinburne University to establish an ongoing program that specifically meets the needs of our students.

Respectful Relationships
The Royal Commission into Family Violence identified the critical role that schools have in creating a culture of respect in order to change the story of family violence for future generations. Everyone involved in our school community deserves to be respected, valued and treated equally.

We know that changes in attitudes and behaviours can be achieved when positive attitudes, behaviours and gender equality are lived across the school community, and when classroom learning is reinforced by what is modelled in our school community. Taking a whole-school
approach is about embedding a culture of respect and equality across our entire school community. This approach leads to positive impacts on students’ academic outcomes, their mental health, classroom behaviour, and relationships between teachers and students.

  • Positive Coping
  • Problem Solving
  • Stress Management
  • Help-seeking
  • Gender and Identity
  • Positive Gender Relations

Aristotle; Emotional Intelligence:
Emotional Intelligence involves a series of abilities relating to the way in which we identify, use and regulate emotions. The development of these skills begins in early childhood, and continues through to adulthood. These skills have been proven to be vital for success
in many areas of life including positive relationships, wellbeing, academic and occupational success. Students at NMPS will be engaging with a series of lessons designed to introduce them to thinking and talking about emotions, understanding what emotions
are, how emotions work and how they can begin to manage their own experiences of strong emotions.
