Errol Street News #12

10 August 2015

Message from Sally

I've been delighted with how vibrant and colourful the corridor into my office has been since the installation of twenty-nine paintings by our student. They are currently ready for silent auction and the procedure is listed later in this newsletter.

Student Absences
The best way to ensure your child is not marked as an unexplained absence is to
1.       Make sure they are in the line before the music stops playing – that is that they are not late!
2.       Send a tiqbiz message to your child’s teacher indicating why and when they are away.
3.       Send a note with your child the day they return with a medical certificate or an explanation of why they were kept away from school.
Unexplained absences are deemed to be ‘unacceptable’ by the Department of Education and may be investigated.

Student Supervision After School
The Yard Duty teacher concludes supervision at 3.45; all students remaining on the school grounds after 3.45 must be supervised by parents on the SOUTH SIDE ONLY.
Parents should be aware that staff are still working in the buildings and children must not access the deck or buildings whilst supervised by parents.

Sports Update - District School Athletics Results

sports kids

Alana, student

Last Friday 7th August, some students from Years 3 - 6 went to Aberfeldie Park to compete in the Districts Schools Athletcs Competition.
There were outstanding performances from many students on the day, with numerous students making it into the inter-districts competition. Overall, North Melbourne Primary School came 2nd.

Us students would love to thank Paul for all his hard work in organizing everyone and for making it possible. Special mention to Luke for supervising and helping out on the day.

Well done to everyone who went and competed!

News from the Garden

Megan, Garden Coordinator

There has been a hive of activity in the garden for the last few weeks as we begin preparing for spring planting. Many of the grade 1, 2 and 3 classes have been helping to prepare our garden by planning what vegetables we'll grow, building some no-dig garden beds and preparing the soil by planting some green manure crops.

The Preps have been honing in their observation skills by creating some wonderful botannical drawings, some examples below.

The grade 2 & 3s have also started an Australian bush foods plot in our garden, make sure you come and have a look!

If anyone has any spare seedling pots, we are always keen for more.

Please contact Megan at megan@northmelbourneps.vic.gov.au if you have any you'd be able to donate.

School Mate - a new app from the Department of Education

Joe, ICT Teacher

SchoolMate is a new app developed for Victorian parents that provides families with an overview of what their child is learning at school, and suggests ways for parents to get involved in their child’s education.

SchoolMate is the first Australian app that connects the curriculum to a child's development.

SchoolMate will:

  • Show parents what their children are learning in school in each subject in every year from Prep to Year 10 according to the Victorian AusVELS curriculum;
  • Provide advice to parents about what they can do at home to help their child learn;
  • Provide ideas for books and apps which parents can download, borrow or buy which are related to their child’s school work.
  • Developed by the Department, SchoolMate works on iPhone, iPad and Android phones and tablets and is available for free download in the App Store and Google Play.

SchoolMate was developed after research by the Department found that parents wanted to know more about what their children were learning at school and what they could do at home to help.
