Errol Street News #21

01 February 2016

Message from Sally

Welcome to the 2016 school year.
The year has started incredibly positively. Staff attended professional learning session on Day One and the Year Level Professional Learning Teams are all well planned and ready to meet your child’s learning needs. The classes are nearly established except for the Preps as they attended for the first time yesterday. All PLT's work collaboratively, this means sharing spaces and teachers. In The Flex, the year 5/6 students use upstairs and downstairs and the same is the case in The Comm. Across the school all spaces are being developed to become purposeful learning spaces, including corridors and shared spaces. Our experience of this way of teacing and learning is The Flex and The Comm last year demonstrated significantly improved student achievement and engagement.

We are still missing a few students; that is they have not attended yet. All students must attend by the end of February – Monday February 29th - or they become Government Unfunded students. If you know of a family who is intending to attend but have not managed to do so yet please encourage them to contact the school ASAP. Those who miss the Census Date - Monday February 29th will not be counted for Government Funding and their class allocations cannot be guaranteed.

We trust you enjoy your time at our school, and become an active NMPS Community member.

School Grounds
Students are supervised in the school grounds from 8.45 am until 8.55am, when the music plays, they are to line up.
After school the Yard Duty teacher will supervise the yard and the new KISS & DROP ZONE (when it is created by Melbourne City Council in Murphy Street) until 3.45pm.
All students are to leave the school grounds by 3.45pm unless they are at Biz e Kidz; this is due to the fact that Biz e Kidz now has to access both the North & South side playgrounds due to increased numbers attending the program.

2016 Staffing
Staff and their grade allocations and room numbers are available on the web-site.

Welcome Preps!

A few words on names. Last year the education department began using the adjective 'foundation' to describe prep students. This has changed for 2016.

NMPS is shifting back to our favoured name Preps!

Who teaches who & who is where?

Pulling together the class lists began in late 2015 and most students visited with their teachers and class mates in the last week of term.

Enrolments have continues into early this year and from previous years experience, will stabilise in the next week or so.

In light of this, the following list of teaching, administrative staff and relative locations if provided for your information.

This has been sent to tiqbiz and the staffing list will be updated in 2-3 days after which you can confidently use the 'absence' and 'contact' facility.

If the matter is urgent please choose the Sandra email and she will forward your message to the staff member required.

Twilight Fete 2016 Newsletter

(6 weeks countdown!)

Friday 18th March 2016 from 4-8pm

Week 7 of this term

The fete committee have hit the ground running since school returned and it has been great to have so many keen and talented people put their hand up to be involved in the fete this year. As all of the details come together we will be able to clarify more and more what we need from the school community so keep an eye on these fete updates to see whether there is something that you think you can help with.

New members are always welcome to join the fete committee. If you would like to be involved, join our regular meeting held every Friday 1:15 in Josie’s grade 1 classroom, room 4.

Fete Committee

Jobs that need to be filled include deciding on food options, lighting, staging, performance scheduling, publicity, community group liaison, distributing flyers, sorting donations and raffles and the job can be as big or small as you can manage.

If you are unable to attend a meeting but would still like to be involved, contact north.melbourne.ps.committee@gmail.com or phone Meg on 0411 755 421 or leave your details with Sandra at reception.

Fete Clusters (see the coloured clusters below)

  • The lead teacher from each year level has now chosen a cluster of fete activities they would like their grade to focus on for the fete. Please check the information below to see what your children will be working on and where you can help.
  • Your assistance will be appreciated in the next few weeks by providing specific donations, supplies or talents to set up the stall e.g. chocolates, painting signs, sourcing supplies, sorting out displays etc.
  • One parent for each student will be asked to volunteer for one hour on the stall on the night of the fete.
  • We are still looking for a year 5 parent to volunteer to coordinate the Fair Food stalls.
  • The Fete Committee will oversee, inspire, excite, source, support and generally troubleshoot to ensure the lead up and the night itself is well organised.

Sponsorship & Donations

We are still actively looking for sponsors to help cover the cost of running the fete and welcome any leads or offers of sponsorship from school families.

  • If you have contacts in the business world that would be open to being asked for sponsorship (financial or services), or donations (vouchers, time, expertise, goods, treats etc.) please let us know.
  • If you have contacts in the food industry that may possibly help with supplies, or wish to have a presence at the fete, again let us know.
  • If you or your child is a part of a community service, cultural group, club, activity or similar – we might like to have them perform for us, demonstrate or educate us – our fete is a community event and we’d love to invite external participation.

Stock Needed

Don’t forget, if you find yourself knee deep in outgrown clothes, toys or other goods, box them up and donate them to the Recycle Shed at the fete.

For the SAKG plant sales and the Craft Stalls we always need a stock of clean jars, tins, pots and other receptacles as well as material and other craft supplies.

Start collecting now and drop us a line to let us know what you have and we can connect you with the class and parent in charge of the cluster relevant.

Supporting students undertaking treatment with cancer

How?

Early notification of infectious disease in particular measles, mumps & chicken pox

We wish to advice you that a student in our school community is currently receiving medical treatment for cancer. This student will be attending school on occasion while recovering from/undergoing treatment.

As a consequence of treatment, this student's ongoing health is at risk if they come into contact with infectious illnesses. It is very important that that do not attend school. It is also important that while your child is unwell they remain at home until they are no longer contagious. Information on infectious conditions can be found on national health websites e.g. www.health.gov.au

If your child has chicken pox, measles or mumps or is suspected of having an illness please contact the school immediately. This will allow the school to assess the probably contact and therefore exposure of our student to disease. Notification can then be given to the parents and medical specialists.

As a school community we value your support in relation to the well being of all of our students. Please do not hesitate to contact Sally if you have any questions.

For advice about talking to children about cancer please see this booklet.

Stitching fault on new school bags

Annoyingly, there is a stitching fault on the latest order of NMPS school bags.

Shoddy embroidery has resulted in the top pocket being unusable.

If you still wish to purchase a bag, they are available from the office at a discount of $15.

New school uniform availability

image001 1

Uniforms will be available for sale each week from this Thursday 4th February.

Times are 8.30am - 10am & 3pm - 3.45pm at the office.

If you are unable to come into the school you can fill out an order form and drop it into the office.

Minimum amount for EFTPOS payments at the office is $20.

Parents & Friends Committee

Meg Moorhouse

Thanks to our Craft Addicts.

Our first making session was such a lovely afternoon.  Thank you all for coming, bringing your kids and enthusiasm, and contributing. Well done especially to Liberty for her magnificent chunky rope necklace designs.

Our next crafternoon is Saturday 20 February, from 1 - 5pm at my house - 27 Erskine St, North Melbourne and we are looking forward to seeing you there.  If you have other ideas, or want to host or attend a kids specific craft session - let me know and if there's enthusiasm and someone to lead it, we'll have to work on that!!

We'll need people to sew bunting - that's a job that could be done in your own time - if you have capacity, maybe email or give Diana a call (salcuri3@bigpond.net.au, 0438 337 500). If you have anything else to contribute to the stall - don't hesitate!! Donations for silent auction or raffle could be ace too.

Remember, if you'd like to contribute to the fete in other ways, our committee are meeting every Friday at 1.15pm (second lunch) at classroom 4 (Josie's).  Alternatively, there are lots of other jobs, but importantly, check in with your teacher about their needs in setting up their stalls - they'll send out requests for help soon, but even saying HI and checking in now will be great.

Regards and huge thanks from the bottom of my crafty heart.

Biz-E-Kidz - Welcome & welcome back!

Biz – E - Kidz would like to extend a warm welcome to all new families and a welcome back to returning families. Already 2016 has been a big year at Biz – E – Kidz with lots of changes currently underway. Watch this space for up to date news.

New Foundation Aftercare Program
Due to increased school size and demand on our service, Biz – E – Kidz successfully applied to increase the number of children it could care for in late 2015. In order to be able to care for the increased number of children safely, the decision was made to split the program into 2; a ‘Foundation Student’ program and a ‘Grades 1 – 6’ program. This allows us to provide a more structured and closely supervised environment for Foundation students with a contained space, focus on routines and higher staff to student ratios.
This has been a major change for Biz – e – Kidz and we welcome any feedback from families. Please email ohsc@netspace.net.au

Don’t Forget to Cancel your Booking!
A reminder to families to inform Biz – E – Kidz if their children if they are not attending an aftercare session. Biz – E – Kidz follows up any no shows, which can be a time consuming and stressful process. Due to the sheer numbers of children at the school, office staff and teachers are not able to let us know if you child was not at school or went home early. Please let Biz – E – Kidz know by phoning 9329 5529 or 0400 838 448 and leaving a message.
