Cloud Relocatable 2016

Welcome to term 4

Cloud Classrooms (image above)
On the great Grand Final public holiday our newest relocatable was effectively ‘handed over’ to the school. Known as the  ‘Clouds’, these buildings are replicas of the Comm. with the wonderful addition of downstairs sinks and adjoining decks.

Our Year 4s were moved in on Tuesday 4th October and we would like to congratulate the staff and students for a seamless transition. Thankyou also to  the students for their understanding of the ‘tricky aspects’ of moving. The staff are thrilled with their new spaces and our DET representative John Stone has asked for us to host a network meeting to share with our neighbouring schools our method of teaching and learning, and use of these spaces.   Kensington Primary School is soon to receive a double like ours and Carlton Gardens will see their two story removed and replaced by a thee story relocatable.

Smoking Ceremony on Friday 14th October
To welcome our community into the new Clouds we will have a smoking ceremony performed by a member of the Wurundjeri Tribe. The Whole School assembly will gather at the Clouds at 3pm.
Kenny Kiosk
We have recently begun the transfer of our management system to Compass. Those families with students at secondary schools may be familiar with this system. The first aspect we have started trialing is staff internal communication and all student attendance is now being completed using the Compass system. The most exciting aspect of this is the Compass Kiosk, fondly known as Kenny.  The Kiosk facility is used by families for late arrivals and early departures. It is located near Sandra in the office (who is currently on leave.)  Kenny is family-friendly and asks you to swipe and tap to record that your child is arriving after school has begun or to document early departures. The information is transferred from the kiosk to our data management system. This is to ensure we have accurate information regarding student attendance.

Attendance Time Reminder
All students are expected to be in the school grounds when the music starts to play, which is at 8.55; the bell sounds at 9.00am. If you arrive after this time you need to come to the office to sign in. Kenny will take your photo; mostly the top of your head until we get him adjusted to look down on the shorter parents. He then delivers you a receipt for the teacher; this process must be completed by parents. It is the responsibility of the parent/carer to sign the child in; you don’t have to take them to class to present the note. The process is for safety and to support staff and students with access to learning time. If you arrive late your child misses the introduction to the day and then interrupts the rest of the class when they are admitted after the class has started.

Are You Leaving NMPS?

If your child is not returning to NMPS in2017, please complete the following exit form. This does not apply our current year 6 students.

Once complete please send to the school office on this email

2017 Calendar Religious and Cultural Celebrations

From Anna-Marie

Thank you so much to those who have already made submissions for our 2017 calendar, however it isn't too late.

It is coming to that time of year and we have to start organising our 2017 calendar. For next years calendar we would like to include all religious and cultural celebrations that our families celebrate.

It is not too late to let us know of any dates or celebrations that are important to your family. If you could please email me the names and dates of any celebrations by Monday 17th October.

Many thanks.

How to Use Compass Kiosk (Kenny)

1.Kiosk located at Office
2. Choose Parent Drop Off or Pick Up
3.Type in Name Choose Your Child
4.Reason Late Parents Choice
5. Child takes receipt to class Kiosk records on Compass

The Kiosk is a new attendance management system and is the first part of NMPS adoption of the Compass whole school management system.

What to do if you are dropping off late or picking up early.

Follow these steps:

Image 1 - Kiosk is located to the left of the Office desk.

Image 2 - Choose option of drop off or pick up.

Image 3 - Type in your name and an image of your child will appear. Tap on this.

Image 4 - Choose the best option for your reason ie. dentist. If you are late, choose parent's choice.

Image 5 - Remove receipt. This is taken to class by your child and is immediately recorded on the Compass system.

Please note. The Kiosk will take your photo; mostly the top of your head. This process must be completed by parents. It is the responsibility of the parent/carer to sign each child in. You don’t have to take your child to class to present the note.

Wellbeing Newsletter

By Jenni Douglas, Zoe Bourdon & Svetlana Raab

We are delighted to introduce ourselves as the North Melbourne Primary School Wellbeing team: Jenni Douglas, a former Assistant Principal; Zoe Bourdon, a Social Worker; and Svetlana Raab a Pre-service School Counsellor.  Zoe is supervising Svetlana in her professional placement.

Our role is to facilitate support for students who are experiencing difficulties in their learning. This may be academic, social, emotional or physical.

Zoe and Svetlana will be running some small groups to work on such things as social skills.  They will also do some 1:1 counselling where required. Jenni will do classroom observations and discuss next steps with the teachers to ascertain appropriate support for the students.  Jenni is also responsible for students who have been assessed as being eligible to receive Government funding through a program called Program of Students with Disabilities.

At school the DET provides us with access to a speech therapist and a psychologist for one day a week. We also often refer students to another Government funded program called 'On-Psych' so another psychologist who attends on a needs basis and is accessible through Medicare for 1:1 counselling also supports students at school.  We may refer your child to one of these specialists or we may suggest a referral to an outside agency.  As you would appreciate with a student population of 735, the task of prioritizing students seen by our visiting specialists is challenging.

Teachers make referrals to our team when they have a concern about one of their students.  We meet with the teacher, perhaps do an observation and arrange a meeting with the parents.  The collaboration of the parents, teachers and Wellbeing team is vital in addressing student special needs.  If it is decided that Zoe and Svetlana work with your child, a permission note will be sent home.

We invite parents to contact us if you have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child.  You can reach us on 9329 6902 ext 110. Please leave a message if we do not answer.  Zoe works Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.  Svetlana works Tuesday and Wednesday.  Jenni works Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and Friday.  You can also email on the following addresses.

Jenni -

Zoe -

We look forward to working with some of you.

Year 5 & 6 letters to Middle School students in Gorizia, Italy

From Anna Henwood, Language Coordinator / Italian teacher

The Year 5 and 6 students have been learning about school in Italy and reflecting on how life for a student in an Italian school is similar or different to school life in Australia.

An opportunity is available for the Year 5 and 6 students to write letters to students in the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy, who attend the school Istituto Comprensivo di Romans d’Isonzo di Mariano del Friuli in Gorizia, Italy. A few years ago I met one of the students, Agnese Zampar, when she was on exchange with her family in Mt Gambier, South Australia. Agnese attended a few of my Italian classes at Tenison Woods College and this led to letter writing between students at Tenison Woods College and in Italy. I have since formed a professional friendship with Agnese’s English teacher, who is very supportive of offering the opportunity for students to write to each other. The school is situated in the small town of Gorizia, which lies on the border between Italy and Slovenia.

All the Year 5 and 6 students at North Melbourne Primary School (NMPS) will be contributing to a class digital gift for the students in Italy, explaining life at school in Australia and in Melbourne in particular. There is also the unique opportunity for students to write directly to each other. This is a wonderful opportunity for a partnership between schools and students.

The Grade 5 and 6 students at NMPS have the opportunity to write to students in Italy!! The students are in la scuola media (middle school) at Istituto Comprensivo di Romans d’Isonzo di Mariano del Friuli in Gorizia, Italy.

In order to help dedicated students write to their pen pals, Maestra Anna is starting an Italian Pen Pal club on Mondays at lunch time starting 17 October (week 3). If you are interested and have returned your permission slip to Maestra Anna, please come along on Mondays from 1pm in the Italian learning space.

Lost Property / Uniform update

lost and found

Spring is in the air and with the change in seasons, we wanted to remind parents and students to label their belongings – especially hats as the kids will be required to wear them in the playground this term.
Lost Property Process

This term, we will be sorting Lost Property on the last Friday of each month (28/10/16, 25/11/16, 16/12/16).  Items left in the playground are gathered into the lost property baskets (located at Biz-E-Kidz, the Flex and near the office). Named items which have been put in the baskets will be returned to the students. Any un-named items will be laid out on the office steps and unclaimed items will be donated to charity at the end of the day.  The baskets end up overflowing with lunch boxes, drink bottles and clothes - please ask your child to check these baskets for any items you haven’t seen in a while.
Labelling clothes

The fabric sharpie will be at school this week to write names on items if needed.  If you would like your child’s name written on school wear, please ask them to come to the office at first lunch on Friday. Names and class will be written in permanent marker on items presented during this time.
Recycling school uniforms

The 2nd hand Uniform shop will be back later this term. If you have any school uniform items to donate, please keep them aside. More information about collection points and how to buy will be provided soon.
