Message from Sally

Yr2 Como Como
Year 2 excursion to Como House

We are now well into the final quarter of the school year and we are rolling into Week 6. It seems like the festive season has already begun with Diwali, Halloween, Spring racing and end of school year events.

Compass
At the start of this term we introduced a new management system called Compass. Many of our families with secondary school students will be familiar with this system. Over the next few months more and more of the features will be offered including on-line permission forms and bill paying facilities. To ensure you hear about it, please ensure we have your correct mailing address. You should send an email to north.melbourne.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au from your best contact email address if you wish to be sure. This school newsletter will also have comprehensive information as it is applicable and timely. If you do not receive an Errol Street News every fortnight please subscribe from our website link here.

Biz-E-Kidz

Biz-E-Kidz is also moving forward into the online work platform with our staff being paid via an electronic time sheet.  We are looking into online enrolment processes too, but not yet. 2017 Biz-E-Kidz enrolments open on Friday 11th November for ONE WEEK; they close on the 18th November. They must be delivered to one of the coordinators - Sharon, Ace, Kelly or Eva only.  We are confident that demand will be met following the Priority of Access Guidelines, and in negotiation with families and the committee.

Foundation Year 2017

Our first 2017 Foundation transition morning was held last Friday with approximately 70% of the enrolled students attending.  All students were expected to attend to confirm their place. At this stage we will have six Foundation classes next year. With the new relocatables on site and operational we will have a FOUNDATION WING & A HALF!

Foundation Parent Information Session

On Thursday 10th November 6.30 – 7.30pm, in the Downstairs Flex Theatrette, we will conduct an Information session. The evening will cover topics such as Biz-E-Kidz enrolment forms, daily school operation and organisational processes will be explained and discussed. The final transition day is Friday 11th with families being invited to attend a special morning tea arranged by current families. This is for Foundation Parents only.

Leaving?
Also, a final reminder if you will not be returning to NMPS and are not in Year 6 please contact the office with your child's name, class and relocation details.

Proposed Instrumental Music at NMPS in 2017

Mission

Provide extended opportunities for student is to develop and explore their musical passions through providing progressive instrumental and voice tuition tailored to the individual needs and preferences of participating students.

Vision

Students will add to the skills developed in the classroom music sessions, giving them opportunities to be leaders in that environment. Students will be given opportunities to explore and extend their musical passions through a blend of student and teacher led learning opportunities.

Key Points:

  • Participating students will learn in small groups of 2-4 children in 20-30 minute blocks (depending on number and age of students).
  • Lessons will be taken by current classroom music teachers Jane & Metta, during school hours or after school in a space TBC.
  • Groups will be organized according to instrument choice and year level (where possible students from the same grade will be taken together).
  • The music teachers will negotiate lesson times with the relevant classroom teachers to ensure minimization of disruption to learning. Students will not be withdrawn from specialist sessions.
  • Lessons will be offered in keyboard/piano, guitar, bass guitar, ukulele, recorder, flute, beginner drums and voice.
  • The estimated cost of the lessons will be calculated in line with VMTA rates and be payable in advance to the teachers (not through the school).
  • To assess viability of the proposed program, interested parents will fill in an expression of interest form in Term 4, 2016 (to be distributed through the newsletter and forms which can be collected at the office).

Mosquito Madness

Mosquito

Melbourne is in the midst of a big season for mosquitos. You may have noticed them hovering around your car windscreen, had more of them in your home than usual, or seen them bursting out of small spaces that have been otherwise empty for a while. They are also around at school.

Whilst mosquitoes do not pose a health threat in Victoria, those pesky bites can be annoying and oh-so-hard not to scratch! So, please be aware that if your child is particularly prone to being bitten then it might be a good idea to send them with some mozzie repellant. (However, please don't send aerosol cans to school.)

Blast From the Past - One Year Ago

IMG 20151105 154552

On year ago this week, our  Errol Street News reported:

The Day A Lake Appeared at NMPS

Joe, ICT Teacher

On Thursday 5th November 2015 the school was battered by heavy and persistent rains.  During the afternoon, we witnessed waterfalls cascade from the Oval carrying soil and debris down to the Basketball Court.  Drains became blocked and the water levels began to rise, forming a lake.  Elsewhere in the school, several rooms flooded including the Staff Room!

Several school community members deserve special recognition for their efforts in the clean up process.

Mustafa was the true hero, single handedly unblocking the drains and clearing thousands of litres of water from the Basketball Court.

Craig leapt in to action, ensuring that all teachers and students were safe before organising for plumbers and electricians to repair the damage.

Huge thanks to Paul, Melissa D and Mandy who worked for many hours clearing debris from the Basketball court.

A big thanks to the whole school community for your help!

School Council News

Aztec Masks 1

NMPS Parents Forum - 7pm Wednesday, 9 November 2016

The School Council recently sought advice on how to efficiently engage with the wider community and how to set priority focus areas to address the enrolment pressures on the school. Based on this advice, the School Council will undertake a survey in the coming weeks to understand the immediate, medium and long term focus to address these pressures. The Council will then implement a staged consultation process, along with the agreed actions from the identified priorities in the coming year.

With this revised course of action, the NMPS Parent Forum will not proceed in its original format. The School Council will use this survey to gain initial insights, rather than using a forum -  following the success of the recent Communications and Buildings and Grounds survey. The survey approach recognises the limitations of forums where not all people are able to attend, or able to easily share their thoughts and opinions. The chosen approach will ensure greater inclusiveness of the wider school community.

A number of parent representatives however have still indicated a desire to meet, given the School Council had already advertised the event and secured the venue. The meeting will proceed as planned at 7pm Wednesday, 9 November at the North Melbourne Community Centre, 49 Buncle Street, North Melbourne, but will be organised and facilitated by a number of parent representatives, not members of the School Council.

Families and friends are welcome to attend to share their thoughts, and any discussions from the evening will be documented and used to help shape the upcoming survey.
