Racial Tolerance Article Herald Sun 19.02.17

Caption from the Sunday Herald, 'North Melbourne Primary School students celebrate their differences...'

From Anna-Marie, Teacher Pedagogy

Last Friday we were approached by the Office of the Minister of Multicultural Affairs to see if we would like to be part of an article about multiculturalism in Victoria with a focus on our amazing and diverse school. That afternoon, a photographer from the Herald Sun came and the results can be seen on pages 10 and 11 of the Sunday paper pictured above.

The article coincides with the government's new policy launch to have one law for all, freedom to be yourself, knowing that discrimination is never acceptable, a fair go for all and that it is up to us to contribute to a Victoria we can all be proud of. These are all values that resonate greatly with our school and even align with concepts that the upper level students are focusing on in their curriculums this term.

The article stated we have over 40 different nationalities and the beauty of our school is that we all learn from each other and celebrate our diversity in many different ways. To keep the celebration going please remember we have our International Picnic coming up very soon and we are asking for our community members to share their cultures with us all. Please see the poster below for more information or email to see how you can be involved.

International Picnic Tuesday 21st March 2017

From Metta, Classroom and Instrumental Music Teacher

North Melbourne Primary School's music program is taking off! All clubs are up and running including Orchestra, Rock Band and Junior Choir (conducted by Jane) and Marimba band, Music Practice club and the NEW Senior Choir (conducted by Metta).
See the schedule above for your interest and please remind your child if they are a member to promptly attend each week's session.

We now also have a second music classroom! (Creatively named 'Music Room 2'.) This is located just outside the office next to the tennis court.

The Marimba band will have their first performance for the year at the upcoming International Picnic at 6pm March 21st. This will be a wonderful evening of celebration and we are delighted to share our joy of playing music on the night!

If your child is a member of Marimba band I would ask that they arrive on the evening at 5:30pm sharp (to Music Room 1).

In more exciting news, the new Instrumental Music program is now in its second week! This is a private practice offered by Jane and myself tutoring students in voice, keyboard, drums, guitar, flute and ukulele in small group lessons. If you have signed up we asked that you finalise the first invoice as soon as possible to confirm your lesson and to ensure tutorial lesson books can be ordered promptly.

Jane and I are looking forward to the jam-packed exciting year ahead!

Term 1 Netball Clinic

The netball clinics are run as a result of a grant of money through Sporting Schools. Netball Victoria are running a four (4) week program whereby each of the Year 6 classes receives expertise coaching from affiliated netball coaches.
The lesson will be held on a Monday and Wednesday during weeks 3, 4, 6 and 7 - (week 5 the Year 6 students are on their school camp.)
The aim of the program is to not only improve the Year 6 students' netball skills but also provides the P.E teachers at NMPS with a number of excellent strategies, drills and skills that we can then use to coach other year levels.

Interesting Sports

Interesting Sports for the Year 5 students the sessions are usually held in the first and second sessions on a Friday. The program aims to provide the students with challenging and fun experiences that cannot always be offered in the school grounds or the classroom. This year the sessions will be held in 1st and 3rd terms. Some of the activities this term will include a visit from Wheelchair Victoria, a trip to the MCG Sports Museum, Tabloid Sports, Cross Country at Royal Park and alternative sports activities held in the school grounds and at external venues. When travelling to activities, it is very important that all students arrive at 8:50am so we can make a prompt departure from school.

As part of our work in year six the students are working towards improving both our school and North Melbourne community. They have formed focus groups with goals and are working through step-by-step, moving towards enacting a positive ‘change’. You will begin to see some changes gradually occurring that will hopefully leave a fantastic legacy from our current Year 6 students. A part of this will be occasional fundraisers, as groups look to fund their ‘change’.

Our first fundraiser was a bake sale held on Friday 17th February. This was 100% organised and run by the students in our Cubby Facelift Project Team. These students included Yesie, Akira, Katrina & Peta and they were assisted by multiple other students on the day. Thanks to all the great baking and generous families in our NMPS community, they successfully raised $970 towards their change.

Our fundraising schedule is below:

Term 1
Recycling & bins group - Sausage sizzle – Friday 10th March
School mural group - Hairspray stall & bake sale - Friday 24th March
Garden group - PJ day – Friday 31st March

Term 2
Canteen and garden fences group - Sausage sizzle – Friday 21st April
Sports equipment group – Sports equipment - Sausage sizzle, jellybean count – Friday 5th May
Book drive group – Donation drive – Friday 19th May

Garden News

Garden Signpost 2017

From Joanna, Garden Specialist
Thank you

Thank you

Thank you!
A huge big thanks to all the wonderful watering volunteers who kept our school garden alive during the holidays.
Thanks go to:
Kevin, Hayley, Kate, Charlotte, Natalie and Liang.
Thanks to all your efforts our plants were lush and beautiful for our first week back and plenty of veggies are ready to harvest for the kitchen.
This term we sadly say farewell to one of our Garden Specialists. Megan Tynan will not be returning to NMPS this year. Megan contributed a lot to our school in the last 18 months, both in the garden and also as an ESO in the classroom. Megan has now taken on a full time role in disability support and we wish her all the best for the future.
Garden Volunteers Needed on Fridays
Students get so much more out of their activities with the support of an adult volunteer.  Gardening knowledge is not required, just enthusiasm and a Working with Children Check (apply online, it's easy and free for volunteers). In term 1 we will have Year Two in the garden and we would love to see you there. Email to find out more.
Happy Gardening Everyone!
