Year 3s participate for one semester in the garden Program and one term in the Kitchen Program.

Years 4 to 6 continue to participate in the Kitchen Program for one term each year.

Gardening

Garden classes foster teamwork and patience. Classes cover garden planning, seasonal planting, soil management and plant health, seed saving, managing compost bins and worm farms. Students are introduced to gardening tools and learn how to use them. We share what we know about the food we grow and the food we like to eat. Our gardens are filled with herbs, vegetables and fruits and are home to many beneficial insects that we can observe throughout the year.

The gardening classes are designed to support students’ understanding and enjoyment of the Stephanie Alexander Pleasurable Food Philosophy.

Cooking

Students in Years Three to Six, have the privilege of harvesting this produce from our garden to prepare healthy, vegetarian seasonal snacks and meals, whilst enjoying eating a meal together and learning vital kitchen life skills such as preparation of different foods and basic knife skills.

The SAKG program provides our children with positive food habits through fun, hands-on learning. Children love preparing recipes, learning new skills, and tasting new foods.
